Acting Agencies

By Dee Bortman

One of the key ingredients to a successful acting career is strong representation. There is no possible way that an actor could forge the kind of industry connections it would take to support a lucrative career while still working as an actor. That is an entire other career in itself, but it is a job that is necessary to support success in film, television, or theatre.

That is why it is so critical to acquire the services of an acting agency. The larger agencies have massive industry connections and adequate resources to maintain them. Casting directors rely on them to provide qualified, well-matched actors for the jobs they have available. Many casting directors actually rely exclusively on a single agent.

This means that the larger and more prominent your agency is, the more work you are likely to get and the more exposure you are likely to get. Especially early in your career, you want to do every job that comes along because you never know where you will be noticed. There is a lot of luck involved in this industry.

The way to get representation is to audition for the acting agency itself. Select a few of the more prominent agencies in your area and send them your resume and headshot. They will call you if they think they will be able to find work for you. They only get paid when you get paid, so this is their prime criteria in selecting candidates. Many agencies also have open auditions at set times each year, and you can find out about these by simple calling the agencies and asking.
